“The Sky is the Limit”
My Dad was born in 1920 and passed away in early 2018 at the age of almost 98. The common thread in his career was being busy with technology. He had a talent for making something out of nothing, making something with nothing. From that point of view, he was a very creative man. A man of few words, but great actions. In the image at the right, he is looking at himself as he used to work high in the sky.
For him, “The Sky was the Limit”….. Literally.

He was a manufacturer of clocks for churches all over Europe.  He also made dials for these churches and while floating along the walls of these church towers (which is no longer allowed nowadays) he mounted these dials himself. If he had his day, he would climb to the highest point of the tower just for fun.

My father had no commercial talent at all. However, he had great technical insight and everything he made was of extremely high quality. He didn’t have to be commercial because by using his technical talent to its full potential, the products he made, automatically sold themselves without him even realizing it.

Randy Smith
This reminds me of a conversation I recently had with Randy Smith from Partnership to Success.  I told him that English was not my first language and that I saw this as a problem for writing my blog posts. Randy simply turned it around and told me this:

“Don’t see it as a problem Marcel, but just write in your post that English is not your first language and ask for help from your readers. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, it’s human. With every challenge, ask yourself how can we benefit from it?”

Wow, that was just a statement and an eye-opener for me. And I immediately realized that my old man did the same thing. He automatically, unconsciously used his technical talent to his advantage to compensate for his missing commercial talents.

Mario Draghi’s “Whatever it takes”

Mario Draghi is an Italian banker, economist, and politician. He has been the current Prime Minister of Italy since February 13, 2021. Previously, he was the President of the European Central Bank from November 1, 2011, to October 31, 2019. During the financial crisis and the associated difficulties in the Eurozone, Mario Draghi gave a landmark speech in July 2012: “Within our mandate, the ECB is ready to do “whatever it takes” to preserve the euro” he said. As president of the ECB, he acted as a figurehead and it was his job to radiate confidence to the public. He did so with verve. With his quote “Whatever it takes,” he showed that he was committed to his mission. In other words: Failure is not an option at all for the ECB.
