Mario Draghi is an Italian economist who has had a long and distinguished career in the world of finance. He is best known for his tenure as President of the European Central Bank (ECB) from 2011 to 2019. During his time at the ECB, Draghi was credited with helping to save the Eurozone from financial collapse during the Eurozone crisis of 2011-2012.
Draghi was born in Rome in 1947. He studied economics at the University of Rome and went on to earn a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After completing his studies, Draghi worked for the World Bank and the Italian Treasury before becoming the Governor of the Bank of Italy in 2005.
In 2011, Draghi was appointed President of the ECB, replacing Jean-Claude Trichet. During his time at the ECB, Draghi implemented a number of measures to help stabilize the Eurozone economy. These included the introduction of the Outright Monetary Transactions (OMT) program, which allowed the ECB to purchase government bonds from struggling countries in order to help them avoid default. He also implemented a number of other measures, such as cutting interest rates and introducing quantitative easing.
Draghi’s tenure at the ECB was widely praised and he was credited with helping to save the Eurozone from financial collapse. He stepped down from his role in 2019 and was succeeded by Christine Lagarde.
